"That's how I would describe Princess Fred," says Sutton Foster, the Tony-winning Broadway star who will play the lead role in the upcoming revival of "Once Upon a Mattress." Foster says she is excited to bring her comedic skills and big voice to the role, which she describes as an "unhinged version of myself."

The Broadway revival of "Once Upon a Mattress" is set to open in the summer of 2023. The musical tells the story of Princess Fred, a clumsy and unconventional princess who must prove her worth to the prince in order to marry him. Foster says she is drawn to the character's "outsider status" and her ability to "find her place in the world."

"I think she's a really relatable character," says Foster. "She's not perfect, but she's trying her best. And I think that's something that we can all appreciate."
