The race was started behind the safety car due to heavy rain, and it was red-flagged after just two laps due to the worsening conditions. The race was eventually restarted after a delay of over three hours, and Verstappen took the lead on the first lap. He held on to the lead throughout the race, despite a late challenge from Russell. The race was eventually stopped again on lap 12 due to the worsening conditions, and Verstappen was declared the winner.
The victory was Verstappen's seventh of the season, and it moved him into the lead of the Drivers' Championship standings. It was also Red Bull Racing's first win at the Belgian Grand Prix since 2014.
